Termites In Your Home Singapore: What is the cause?

Types of termites

If left untreated, termites can cause immense damage to your home. These wood-boring pests thrive deep within your home and foundation, slowly eating away at its core, unnoticed. There are three main groups of termites that can affect your home, subterranean, drywood, and dampwood termites. The most common group of termite typically found in homes are subterranean termites. Subterranean termites often enter the home from areas where wood comes in contact with the ground, by squeezing through cracks as small as a business card or by using the mud tubes they construct to travel from their below ground colonies to infest wood in your home

What is the cause of termites?

As the name suggests, dampwood termites seek out for damp/moist wood while drywood termites seek out for dry wood. Subterranean termites look out for moist soil nearby and is attracted to any type of wood in contact with the ground. The three main causes of termites include moisture, wood in contact with the foundation of the building and cracks in the building.

1)Moisture

Leaky pipes, unsuitable drainage, and bad airflow all generate problems of moisture that attract termites. Especially in humid settings, dampwood and subterranean termites thrive. While dampwood termites prefer water-damaged wood, underground termites can not live without sufficient moisture surrounding them.

2)Wood In Contact With Foundation Of Building

Termite species such as subterranean termites, need to move through wood or soil to get inside houses. Termites can then create paths called mud tubes inside the building to navigate around the building. Having wood touching the basis of homes makes these structures vulnerable to infestation.

3)Cracks In Building

Any gaps or cracks in the building are open opportunities for termites to enter easily and also provide space for them to infest and start a huge colony of termites.
